The U-2 High Altitude Spy Plane
Graphics:
The U-2 Thumbnails
This page displays all of the thumbnails for all of my photos of the U-2 and photos from the U-2 that I have located across the web.
It does not include graphics related to the ER-2, NASA's version of the U-2. The thumbnails for the ER-2 are located on a separate page (see below).
Thumbnails
I display a "thumbnail" of each photo. And, in each case I have shown the original graphic URL as well as the URL of any "information page" that referenced that graphic.
Each of the thumbnails also links to another page on my site containing the thumbnail as well as a "full size" version of the graphic. The page on my site also contains additional information about the graphic. And, for some of the graphics, it contains additional links (e.g., to
different sizes or revolutions of the graphics.)
The U-2:
My brother was a U-2 pilot in the U. S. Air Force. Then he left to become a commercial pilot for United Airlines. Now he has returned to the Air Force to again fly the U-2. This is a page about his plane.

U-2: Trial of Francis Gary Powers
On 1 May 1960, U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down by the Soviets over Sverdlovsk. He was tried in August 1960, in a three-day open trial in Moscow and was sentenced to 10 years by the USSR Supreme Court's Military Cases Collegium. He spent 21 months in prison and was then exchanged in February 1962, for Soviet intelligence officer Rudolph Abel, who had been arrested in New York in 1957.

U-2 Photograph of
Missile Handling and Storage Facility, Berbera, Somalia
Photograph of Soviet military installations near Berbera, Somalia, in Jun.1975. It also contained a depot for anti-shipping missiles for the Soviet fleet in the Indian Ocean. Schlesinger used the high-altitude U-2s because the CIA did not want to release satellite photographs to members of the US Congress. DoD photo.

U-2: Trapeze Stealth Modifications
"Trapeze" is one of two modifications Kelly Johnson used to reduce the U-2's radar signature. Trapeze attached long bamboo poles to both wings parallel to the fuselage and then attached wires to these poles. In addition, some "beaded" wires were used. The objective was to use these wires to "trap" radar pulses. The second modification called "Wallpaper" covered the body and wings of the aircraft with anechoic materials to absorb radar energy.

U-2 Over Beale Air Force Base
This picture of a U-2 over Beale Air Force Base is from an unknown source. I obtained it on the net before I began keeping such detailed records.
I was fortunate enough to chase U2s down the runway here and also to fly as a passenger in a small training plane (not a U2) out of Beale.
