Yahoo! WebRing Glossary This page offers a small glossary of Yahoo! WebRing terms. This glossary is not complete. It is missing terms. If it is missing a term you are looking for, please email me.
What About Other Webring Systems?
This glossary focuses only on the Yahoo! WebRing system. Many of these terms do not apply to the other webring systems like RingSurf, Ringlink and Bravenet. Glossary active – a site that has been accepted into a Yahoo! WebRing and has not been suspended. An active site is displayed on the Ring List (Hub) page. activate – to change a site in a Yahoo! WebRing from suspended status to active status. This is done on the Manage Member Pages page. broken – on of three statuses assigned by the Automated Management System (AMS). Indicates a site that does not pass the Automated Management System (AMS) validation of either the JavaScript or alternative HTML. For information on how validation is performed, see my page Yahoo! WebRing Validation. JavaScript Code – the JavaScript placed on a member site to load the navbar stack at browse time. See also Navbar, Navbar Stack and Navbar Stack Shell. For a description of how the JavaScript works, see my page Yahoo! WebRing JavaScript. top of page banner bar – a colored bar at the top of each Yahoo! WebRing page. It contains white lettering to display information to identify the page. This is usually either "Yahoo Webring" for general pages or the name of the webring for webring specific pages.
Navbar
– a horizontal "bar" containing the webring name, optional picture, ringmaster Yahoo! ID and the links for each individual Yahoo! WebRing. See also Navbar Stack and Navbar Stack Shell.
Navbar Code – see JavaScript Code Navbar Stack – a stack of Yahoo! WebRing navbars, plus the Navbar Stack Shell. See also Navbar and Navbar Stack Shell.
Navbar Stack Shell
– the gray border that surrounds the individual navbars as well as the entire stack. The Navbar Stack Shell exists once the JavaScript is placed on the page, even if no webrings in the Yahoo! WebRing system have been approved. If there are no approved webrings in the Yahoo! WebRing system, the Navbar Stack Shell will just exist as a single narrow bar.
ring ID – a code of up to 16 characters that identifies a webring. For example, consider the following URL. This URL is for the list page of RingMasters Disappointed with Yahoo! WebRing. Note in this URL that it says "ring=ringmastersdisap". The webring ID is "ringmastersdisap". The webring ID is usually the name of the webring. If too long, it is truncated. If it would create a duplicate, Yahoo! WebRing adds a number to make the ID unique. http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=ringmastersdisap&list Server Side Navigation Bar – Yahoo! WebRing's name for the navigation code delivered at browse time by the JavaScript. site ID – a numeric code that identifies a particular site. For example, consider the following URL. This URL is the link to go from the RingMasters Disappointed with Yahoo! WebRing navbar on my site to the Ring List (Hub) page. The webring ID is "ringmastersdisap". Note that right after the webring ID the URL says "id=1". This identifies the site. The site ID is "1". Every site in a Yahoo! WebRing is assigned a unique numeric site ID. http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=ringmastersdisap&id=1&hub SSNB – abbreviation for Server Side Navigation Bar suspend – to change a site in a Yahoo! WebRing from active status to suspended status. This is done on the Manage Member Pages page. suspended – a site that has been accepted into a Yahoo! WebRing but which is no longer "active". A suspended site is not displayed on the Ring List (Hub) page. unknown – one of three statuses assigned by the Automated Management System (AMS). Indicates that the AMS is unable to determine whether the JavaScript or alternative HTML is working or broken. For information on how validation is performed, see my page Yahoo! WebRing Validation. working – on of three statuses assigned by the Automated Management System (AMS). Indicates a site that passes the Automated Management System (AMS) validation of either the JavaScript or alternative HTML. For information on how validation is performed, see my page Yahoo! WebRing Validation.
The Wazillion Navbars Project Webring Sections and Subsections The Webring Section is a large section of my website. I have divided it into four major "subsections".
Each "subsection" has it's own special "logo". As you travel in the various subsections you will find, near the bottom of each page, links to pages within that subsection and also links to the other subsections. To go to any subsection, just click on the "logo" or on the text link for that subsection.
Webrings: General Information This subsection includes general information about webrings. Webrings can be hosted by a variety of different services. This section deals with the overall concepts and issues, not with any one particular "brand" of webring. It includes my Webring FAQ, links to articles about webrings, and general help information. Click here or on the graphic.
The WebRing.com System This subsection includes specific information about the WebRing.com system. While not the only webring system on the net, it is the best known and the most used. I own many webrings in this system and belong to many webrings in this system. (I also own and belong to many webrings in other systems as well.) Click here or on the graphic.
Webrings I Own and Belong To This subsection shows all the webrings I own and links to all the webrings to which I belong. This includes webrings in Ringlink, RingSurf, Bravenet and the WebRing.com system as well. If you are looking to join one of my webrings, this is a good place to start. If you wonder about the webrings I belong to, this is the place to go. Click here or on the graphic. |
