A Western Union Telegram
Connections

Around the corner is a friend
In this great city that has no end.
Yet days go by and weeks rush on,
Before I know, a year is gone.

I never see my old friend's face,
For life's a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days I rang his bell,
And he rang mine.

Yes we were stronger, younger then,
And now we're busy, stressed, tired men.
Tired of playing the foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow, I will call on Jim
Just to show I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner! — yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir — Jim died today."
That's what we get, a sorrowed end:
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

If you love someone, say so
Always speak from your heart
Express yourself fully
Before you depart.

Seize the day — now!
Strive to have no regrets.
Embrace often your family and friends.
They have all helped to make you
Who you are today.
And they all are what it's about anyway.

A friend sent me a version of this. (I made a few editorial and poetic changes.)

He and I shared great times together at a prior job assignment and have seen each other only rarely since.

It said a lot to me. I hope you not only enjoy it, but also reflect on it. If it touches you, why not forward it on to some of your friends? Maybe someone you haven't contacted in a while . .
